Chiostro

Inside a magical cave, spectators meet Antonio Catalano, ready to tell stories with the Kamishibai, an ancient Japanese theatre of images.

A special way of storytelling that combines words and illustrations: Catalano leafs through illustrated plates kept in a small wooden case, while the sweet sound of the accordion accompanies each tale. A poetic and intimate moment, capable of enveloping the audience in an immersive atmosphere, as if the story came to life right before their eyes.

Antonio Catalano was born in Potenza in 1950. After years of presence on the Italian stage of research theatre with Maurizio Agostinetto, set designer and graphic designer, Luciano Nattino, author and director, and Lorenza Zambon, actress and author, he founded the Casa degli alfieri theatre company, a professional body of project research in the field of the arts, based in the house-theatre of the same name in the heart of Monferrato.
In 1999, her interactive art path Universi sensibili was born, with the debut of the installation Armadi sensibili at the Venice Biennale.
Since then, the artist practices the abandonment of any traditional idea of performance, pursuing the search for artistic and festive encounters involving visitors of all ages, in which he tends to provoke poetry, emotion and wonder. New large-scale installations and art trails are created in co-production and in collaboration with important national and international organisations.
In addition to creating many sensitive universes around Europe, imaginary worlds made of poetry, celebration and wonder, he writes, tells and sings sound and silent stories, which he has collected in several publications and on two CDs.
In 2013, he inaugurated the new art space Magopovero, an exhibition, creative, and artistic space in which he has exhibited the poetic paths and works he has created over the years all over the world and where he has realised numerous events, workshops and performances. Catalano is promoting the poetic movement of Pedagogia Povera all over the world, with educational, workshop, narrative and performance events.
