Balagan is a fascinating journey through 20th-century chamber music, from Bartók to Vivier, Milhaud to Horovitz and Schoenfield. The works in the programme, inspired by folk traditions, blend the vitality of popular music with the refinement of chamber writing, sometimes enriched by jazz influences.
Leading this journey is a trio composed of Dutch violinist Noa Wildschut, Spanish clarinettist Pablo Barragán and German pianist Amadeus Wiesensee. The concert opens with Darius Milhaud's Suite for violin, clarinet and piano, which reflects the influence of folk music and Brazilian jazz.
This is followed by Paul Schoenfield's Four Souvenirs, a work composed of four movements, each of which is a modern interpretation of a popular musical genre, and Béla Bartók's Contrasts, one of the most iconic works for clarinet, violin and piano. The second part continues with Joseph Horovitz's brilliant Sonatina for clarinet and piano, followed by Claude Vivier's Pezzo for violin and clarinet, with its rarefied harmonic language, and Schoenfield's Trio for violin, clarinet and piano, which blends jazz influences and popular melodies. The performance by Wildschut, Barragán and Wiesensee highlights the virtuosity and timbral variety of this repertoire, restoring its energy and sophisticated plurality of languages. A concert that celebrates the beauty and versatility of chamber music.
