Young Giacomo Bisordi, former assistant director to Milo Rau, Peter Stein and Gabriele Lavia brings Peng to the stage, a comedy written in 2017 by German playwright Marius Von Mayenburg for the Schaubühne in Berlin just after Donald Trump’s election to the presidency of the United States.

Striving to be faithful to Mayerburg’s maxim that “the theatre shouldn’t make you feel safe”, Bisordi constructs an atrocious political metaphor, a dramatic investigation into the rise of a new generation of strongmen, leaders full of unconditional love for their own nations, ready to provide very simple answers to incredibly complex problems.
Intended as an adaptation of Mayerburg’s play to the situation in Italy, the performance takes the form of a theatrical documentary featuring a cast of six actors who interpret the roles of Peng and his parents, a hard-hitting reporter and ten different characters including a woman physician faithful to Hippocrates, a narcissistic obstetrician, an arms dealer who escaped the 1980s and a victim of repeated domestic violence.
Is Peng just an unusual child or a monster fed by his parent’s hypocrisy?
Monstrosity pervades this comedy oblivious to rules and leaves it up to the audience to find an answer.
