Is there room in our society for people who deviate from the norm? What does it mean to care for one another in a changing world?
Winter 2018. On a trip to the United States, Tom arrives, by luck or coincidence, in a small town near the Canadian border. Willard finds himself on the shores of a boundless lake, surrounded by the ruins of a former psychiatric hospital. A chance encounter with an extraordinary landscape and a small church community turns into a compelling journey in which Tom discovers that his personal life is intertwined with the town and the people of Willard. Finding Willard is a cinematic play. It is a travel narrative about building and decay, a personal quest about care and community.
"The many special people Tom Struyf presents, with their pain and happiness, are immensely intriguing. A worthy portrait of sincere attempts at human care. It shows how goodwill gets lost in a bad system." (Ron Rijghard, NRC Handelsblad)
