Music by Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart

The Stradivari Ensemble – a group comprising award-winning musicians who are members of leading national and international orchestras – presents a refined and elegant programme dedicated to Viennese Classicism. Beethoven, Haydn and Mozart engage in a musical dialogue through a chamber music journey ranging from string trios to quartets with flute, highlighting the variety of composition and the formal balance of the Central European style of the late 18th century.

Four internationally renowned musicians form the Stradivari Ensemble: a chamber music project that showcases the sound of the instruments crafted by Antonio Stradivari, which belong to the Stradivari Habisreutinger Foundation in St. Gallen and have been on loan to the ensemble since 2007.
The programme delves into the heart of Viennese Classicism, comparing three distinct approaches to chamber music composition. Beethoven’s Trio Op. 9 No. 1, one of the most significant works of his early period, features a composition characterised by a multitude of themes and keys that foreshadow the subsequent expansion of the sonata form.
In the Trio in G major, Op. 53 No. 1, Haydn constructs an original form based on double variations between major and minor, followed by a rondo-style finale animated by continuous thematic transformations.
In Mozart’s Quartet K 285, composed in Mannheim in 1777, the flute takes centre stage, supported by a light string accompaniment. The Adagio, one of the finest pieces in the flute repertoire, stands out for its expressive character and the quality of its composition.
