A Waltz Reinvented: As part of Steps, Basel-based choreographer Johanna Heusser transforms her existing work waltz, waltz, waltz into a 15- to 20-minute duet that takes place off the traditional stage. Followed by a participatory workshop of about 40 minutes, this short version offers a playful approach to the art of waltzing. A mini dance class for everyone!

May I invite you to dance? The waltz has a turbulent history: its spins sometimes induced the dancer into a trance-like state, to the point that this dance style was banned in some places. Today it seems to have been tamed, inextricably associated with the allure of ballrooms, weddings, and princely dreams à la Sissi.

How, then, to rediscover the original potential of the waltz? Johanna Heusser offers an overview of the basic steps - solo or partnered - and shows how the application of this style can be functional outside of heteronormative narrative or couple logic.

Workshop open to all, with or without waltz experience.
