Gioacchino Balistreri
Director, soundtrack and stage music composer. He graduated with honours from the Italian conservatory A. Scarlatti, he studied Music for Film at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, under the guidance of Oscar-winning maestro Luis Bacalov. His latest works as a composer include the original music for the film Reinas by Klaudia Reynicke, co-written with the same director, which was selected by Switzerland for the 2025 Oscar race. The film won the Grand Prix for Best Film at the Berlinale (Generation Kplus section), Prix du Public UBS at the Locarno Film Festival, Best Screenplay at the Festival du Cine de Lima and in competition at the Sundance Film Festival 2024. He composed the original music for Nico Bonomolo's short film Maestrale , winner of the David di Donatello 2022 and in the running for the Oscars 2023, and the incidental music for Mauro Avogadro's film Eichmann. Dove inizia la notte, written by Stefano Massini, with Ottavia Piccolo and Paolo Pierobon, and Fine pena: ora, written by Paolo Giordano and produced by Teatro Piccolo in Milan. Author of soundtracks for Lucky Red and Tramp Limited productions, he has worked on films that have won major festivals including the Giffoni, Taormina Film Fest and Santa Barbara Int. Film Festival. His latest film as director, screenwriter and composer, Jolly, with Remo Girone and Rosario Tedesco, produced by Central Productions in Lugano in co-production with RSI, the Federal Office for Culture and the Ticino Film Commission, was selected at the Ferrara Film Festival 2024 as best international short film. He wrote, directed and set to music the short film De Angelis, with Giulio Brogi and Vladimir Randazzo, distributed by Premiere Film, for which he won a special mention at the Prato Film Festival 2021. His first work as a director, the documentary Quartamedia, was presented at the Castellinaria Young Film Festival 2018 by Giancarlo Zappoli, director of MyMovies. He leads annual workshops on soundtracks and short film making at the Locarno Film Festival.
