Brecht, Censorship, Democracy, and Exile Today.

In 1947, the trial of German playwright Bertolt Brecht took place before the House Un-American Activities Committee. A list of the absurd questions Brecht was forced to answer serves as the starting point for the performance. Exile, trials for subversion, the humanistic refuge of an untraceable “elsewhere,” and the realization that even a seemingly democratic country can exercise censorship: these are some of the themes that run through *Four Walls and a Roof*.
Drawing on their own voluntary emigration from Beirut to Berlin, the artistic duo —Theaterpreis Berlin 2026—examines, through a playful approach, the misfortunes of a great idealist and articulates political reflections on the present, questioning just how free and open the reality in which we live truly is.
