Following Azul – Joy, Fury, Faith and Eternal Love, Daniele Finzi Pasca returns to direct Stefano Accorsi in an original theatrical reinterpretation of the myth of Ulysses: a true journey into the psyche, the soul and the adventures of the most human of Homer’s heroes.
In his director’s notes, Daniele Finzi Pasca states: “I am a conscientious objector; in my country, I happened to serve a few months in prison for refusing to do military service, so recounting the exploits of warriors is not only unusual for me but entirely uncharacteristic, a sort of somersault without a safety net. I am a clown; I love simple heroes, the underdogs, those in whom I recognise myself, the fragile ones, those made of crumbly stuff. So I have transformed the inner dialogue of a sacred hero into a dialogue brimming with love between a fragile hero and his beloved. And so Penelope arrived, a quiet fire, the wild rhythm of femininity, and our adventure was joined by Francesca, starry sky, the voice that guides us home. We clowns deal essentially with drama; we make people laugh to distract the audience’s souls and, when they least expect it, we strike them with the pain of those who fall and break. I wanted an Ulysses who would make people laugh and then cry, smile and then be moved, who was made of the same stuff as our most innocent memories, who spoke of love and little of blood.”
