By cutting up and piecing together photographic memories and donning a polar bear costume, Camilla Parini shares a fresh take on her personal story, navigating the space between reality and fantasy, between the inability to define oneself and the need to tell one’s story.
Through a narrative of memory and a one-to-one encounter, the Ticino-based artist constructs and deconstructs an idea of family, of identity and of memory. Are we what we remember? How important is the place we come from? And the stories we tell ourselves?
In Je suisse (or not), Parini plays with her childhood memories, with words spoken and unspoken, with traces erased and those left behind: “One day my grandmother told me: remember to look for the bear! Then life went on, and I forgot so many things”.
