Lorenzo Conti introduces British-Bengali choreographer Akram Khan on stage at LAC with Thikra: Night of Remembering.

Diversity is the common thread that unites all the works of award-winning British-Bengali choreographer Akram Khan, from intangible concepts, themes and stories that transcend cultural barriers and preconceptions, to tangible ones: a diverse mix of dancers and musicians of different nationalities, languages and social backgrounds. His artistic instincts have resulted in striking collaborations with artists from a variety of genres and fields, from ballet legend Sylvie Guillem(Sacred Monsters) and Spanish flamenco artist Israel Galván(Torobaka) to actress Juliette Binoche, composer Steve Reich and DJ-composer Nitin Sawhney. This meeting on the occasion of the performance Thikra: Night of remembering is a fascinating on-the-road journey through the works in which the choreographer, thinking cross-culturally, interdisciplinarily and transnationally, and by fusing contemporary European dance with classical Indian Khathak dance, has helped redefine the meaning of "diaspora" in the 21st century.

Curator, designer, trainer and essayist, in the field of contemporary dance he obtained his master's degree in 2014 from the University of Milan with a thesis entitled New practices and tools for a dance culture in Italy. In January 2024 he took over as artistic co-director of the MILANoLTRE Festival dealing with programming and new generations. From 2020 he is artistic advisor for dance at the LAC Lugano Arte e Cultura cultural center and from 2022 curator of the international festival Lugano Dance Project. In 2019 he co-signed his first book The Audience in Dance - Communities, Memories, Devices (Scalpendi Editore). In the educational field, he has carried out activities at IED Milan, Museo Maga, Hangar Piemonte, Festival Danza Estate and Scuola di Teatro "Luca Ronconi." Since 2013 he has been teaching History of Theater and Dance at the Susanna Beltrami/DanceHaus Academy. He was also a member of the selection committees of Tanzfaktor 2022-2024 (Switzerland) and Nid Platform 2023.
