To mark the solo exhibition that the LAC is dedicating to Romeo Castellucci, the programme presents the documentary Theatron by the award-winning Venetian director Giulio Boato, a visual portrait of one of the leading masters of contemporary theatre, a visionary artist whose work has always engaged with the roots of theatre and the great questions about human nature.

Having followed Romeo Castellucci’s work for over two years through international tours, rehearsals, archives and meetings with collaborators and scholars, Giulio Boato has created Theatron, an immersive work that paints a portrait of one of the most influential and radical figures on the contemporary scene. The film traces over twenty-five years of artistic exploration, weaving together fragments of performances, archive material and first-hand accounts to construct a journey into a unique theatrical imagination.
More than a simple visual biography, Theatron takes the form of an investigation into theatre itself: its origins, its function and its capacity to interrogate the present. Through the story of key works – from the early days of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio to major international productions, via creations that have now become iconic – an artistic practice emerges that constantly questions the relationship between image, body, language and spectator.
Set to the music of Vivaldi, the film alternates between accounts of the performances and reflections by Castellucci and some of his closest collaborators – playwrights, composers, choreographers (including Cindy Van Acker), critics and actors (including Willem Dafoe) – offering a glimpse into a creative process that is normally invisible and conveying the complexity of a journey that has redefined the language of contemporary theatre.
