A free adaptation of Goethe’s *Faust*, this film concludes the tetralogy that Sokurov has dedicated to figures of power—following *Moloch*, *Taurus*, and *The Sun*—choosing to turn his gaze away from the great protagonists of history and toward the very origins of the desire for domination. The director thus transforms the story of the famous scholar willing to make a pact with the devil into a visionary and unsettling cinematic experience. 
Set in a liminal world of winding streets, distorted interiors, and landscapes that seem to belong to an undefined time, the film follows a restless and dissatisfied Faust, unable to find answers to his questions about knowledge, the body, desire, and the meaning of existence. At his side, an ambiguous and grotesque Mephistopheles accompanies him on an increasingly dark and dizzying journey. 
Through extraordinary visual artistry—featuring painterly images, distorting lenses, and hallucinatory atmospheres—Sokurov creates a work that transcends the traditional narrative to become a profound reflection on human ambition, the limits of reason, and the relationship between matter and spirit.
