Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73
The Staatskapelle Dresden, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras, makes its debut at the LAC under the baton of Daniele Gatti, who will take up the post of principal conductor in 2024. The soloist is Augustin Hadelich, a leading figure on the international violin scene. The programme brings together two cornerstones of the German symphonic repertoire: Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.
The season’s first major symphonic event features the Staatskapelle Dresden – one of the leading orchestras in the European tradition – conducted by Daniele Gatti, its principal conductor.
The evening’s co-star is violinist Augustin Hadelich, one of the most sought-after performers on the international scene, acclaimed for the clarity of his tone, his technical precision and the quality of his phrasing.
The programme celebrates German Romanticism: on the one hand, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, with an Apollonian balance between soloist and orchestra, in constant dialogue; on the other, Brahms’ Symphony No. 2, which introduces a change of atmosphere, with a more relaxed and luminous style of writing. Here, the balance between density and lightness, between lyrical momentum and formal control, is at once a sublimation of naturalness and complexity.
The juxtaposition of Beethoven and Brahms thus traces a coherent path within the nineteenth-century symphonic tradition, between formal rigour and expressive breadth.
