One of the most influential voices in contemporary jazz, Chilean saxophonist Melissa Aldana brings a quartet to Jazz in Bess that combines expressive depth with sonic exploration. Her musical language, poised between tradition and modernity, is distinguished by a rare balance of emotional intensity, control of sound and freedom of improvisation.
Described as one of the most important musicians and composers of her generation, Melissa Aldana has established herself on the international scene with a personal style in which sound is at the heart of her exploration. Her music – which can be situated within the poetics of modern post-bop – combines a contemplative dimension with an intensity that smoulders beneath the surface, maintaining a balance between technical mastery and emotional richness. “Every single note is a whole world,” says the saxophonist, pointing to a conception in which timbre and breath become essential elements of composition.
Following her victory at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 2013 – the first female instrumentalist and first South American musician to win the award – Aldana has cemented her career with albums such as “Visions” (inspired by Frida Kahlo and nominated for a GRAMMY Award) and “12 Stars” (released by Blue Note Records), which have confirmed her leading role on the contemporary scene.
In a quartet, alongside Pablo Held, Pablo Menares and Kush Abadey, she develops an open and dynamic musical dialogue, in which each instrument contributes to the creation of an ever-evolving ensemble sound.
