Tovel, aka Matteo Franceschini, brings to the LAC Songbook, a project co-produced by the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana and commissioned by the Venice Biennale, where the composer was awarded the Silver Lion. A work that brings together contemporary composition, rock and live electronic music.
An internationally active composer, performer and multi-instrumentalist, Matteo Franceschini pursues a body of work that spans contemporary and electronic music, establishing a novel relationship between composition and performance. With Songbook, a work presented at the Venice Biennale, the song form is approached from an experimental perspective, exploring its structures and expressive possibilities.
The project brings together a rock quartet, an amplified ensemble and live electronics, in a sonic framework where different languages coexist whilst retaining their distinct characteristics. The interaction between the musicians is built on contrasts, distortions and shifts in direction, resulting in a structure unfolding as a sequence of interconnected songs.
Balancing energy and compositional rigour, Songbook juxtaposes the complexity of contemporary composition with the immediate impact of electro-rock, exploring a borderline territory that lies at the heart of Franceschini’s entire body of work. The result is an open form, in which composition and performance unfold as a single process.
