33 Variations on a Waltz by Anton Diabelli, Op. 120

One of the leading figures on the international piano scene, Evgeny Kissin returns to the LAC stage with a recital entirely dedicated to Beethoven, marking the bicentenary of his death. From his early works in Vienna to the visionary Diabelli Variations, the programme spans the composer’s entire creative career, showcasing his inventive power and his ability to revolutionise the language of the piano.

The Russian-born, British-naturalised pianist Evgeny Kissin – one of the most charismatic figures on the international scene – dedicates his programme to Ludwig van Beethoven, on the 200th anniversary of his death.
The first two sonatas already chart a surprisingly broad trajectory: Sonata No. 1, composed during his early years in Vienna and dedicated to Joseph Haydn, reveals a rapidly expanding musical language, whilst Sonata No. 13, Quasi una fantasia, transcends the boundaries of traditional form with a continuous and free style of writing, in which the movements follow one another without interruption.
Crowning the recital are the monumental Diabelli Variations, among the absolute pinnacles of the piano repertoire. Starting from a simple waltz, Beethoven constructs a sonic universe of extraordinary variety, transforming, distorting and reinventing the theme with boundless imagination.
A leading interpreter of this repertoire, Kissin combines sonic power, technical precision and an interpretative imagination capable of renewing every listening experience, restoring to Beethoven all his visionary force and his inexhaustible modernity.
