The Christmas ballet The Nutcracker is back, reimagined by choreographer Mauro Bigonzetti to Tchaikovsky’s famous score. Bringing this choreographic tale to life is the award-winning MM Contemporary Dance Company, directed by Michele Merola.
An engaging ballet which, retracing the adventures of Drosselmeier, Clara, Fritz and the Prince, invites the audience to lose themselves in the world of their imagination. Amid references to Hoffmann’s original tale, 3D stage designs and a physical language that intertwines reality and fantasy, the young Clara embarks on a symbolic journey marking the transition from childhood to adulthood, in an atmosphere suspended between dream and wonder.
A production in which Bigonzetti, former director of Aterballetto and the Corps de ballet of La Scala in Milan, harnesses the full evocative power of movement and music, which, transcending all language, create a narrative flow capable of immersing us in the story, bridging generational gaps and differing modes of perception.
Thanks to sets composed of three-dimensional images and costumes without a specific temporal setting, this Nutcracker takes shape in an unreal environment, in tune with contemporary technological aesthetics. Here, the perception of the flow of images is mocked by optical illusions, and the continuous interplay and overlapping of reality and fantasy seem to generate a sort of electronic short-circuit.
