Romeo Castellucci, recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2023 Venice Biennale, returns to the LAC – which is dedicating a solo exhibition to him this year – with an original reinterpretation of Goethe, bringing to the stage a visionary production, enriched by the electroacoustic music of the American composer Scott Gibbons, his long-standing collaborator.
“Riddle Number One – I do not live in the name, but in the brand. I choose the moment, but it does not want me. What I seek devours me. What devours me does not satisfy me. When I signed, the hand was mine. When I spoke, the voice was someone else’s. Since then, I walk in the company of what I asked for. And the further I go, the more the ground becomes a thread. My garment does not warm me, does not weigh me down, does not fall from me. Who am I?
Riddle Number Two – I do not create: I corrode. I do not deny the truth, I render it useless. I do not knock: I am already inside. I do not lie: I twist words. I bring light without warmth. I suggest paths that descend whilst ascending. I do not ask for the soul: I make it seem like a remnant. I smile when you consent. I vanish when you call upon me. Who am I?
Riddle Number Three – I shatter into a thousand pieces, yet I am one. Whoever tries to tame me is found by me. Whoever tries to ignore me falls into my arms. I am the wind that bends the trees for no reason. Whoever seeks me in error finds me in the rule. I am the secret heart of what you call law. I have no form; I possess them all. Kings fear me; the winds invoke me. Who am I?” (Romeo Castellucci)
