One of the most important choreographers on the contemporary scene, Angelin Preljocaj returns to the LAC with his new creation, Soulèvement (Uprising): twelve dancers bring to life a dance of insurrection that opens up a space from which emerge the most intense surge of unity, the most powerful sense of freedom and the deepest feeling of brotherhood.
“How can we define that mysterious energy that brings us together, transcending our differences, our individualities and our belief systems?” writes the renowned Franco-Albanian choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. “That energy that unites us in the streets, in the village squares or in the heart of cities? The energy that makes us rise from our sofas, that drives and overwhelms us, that spreads like a wave from one body to another and conveys a shared instinct in the face of injustice, social inequalities and the economic divide.
From antiquity through the Enlightenment to the present day, history has been punctuated by these sudden uprisings, fuelled by a dream or a desire for utopia, but more often by a vital necessity.
This primordial energy, this movement of bodies, rises like a living barrier, shifting shape like a flock of starlings that scatters and reforms on the horizon. It is this wild beauty, nourished by the energy of despair and the desire to ignite a spark of renewal, that I wish to circulate through bodies as pure joy.”
