Born out of a need to examine and bridge the divide between work and parenthood, Parentèle – Première relation is the result of an inaugural artistic residency at the LAC in Lugano, created by Swiss choreographer Yasmine Hugonnet in collaboration with Silvia Costa.
By bringing together on stage female choreographers who are also mothers, the project imagines a situation in which the presence of children does not represent an obstacle or an organisational problem, but becomes a natural and integral part of professional practice.
The piece takes shape from the relationship between the mother’s body and that of the child, transformed into choreographic material and a starting point for artistic exploration. At the same time, the performance addresses the issues that constantly intertwine between the two roles of mother and artist; bringing one’s child along is not always the simplest solution and can entail significant costs, both financially and emotionally.
In a context where female artists often find themselves facing these challenges alone, Parentèle - Première relation aims to explore personal experiences, norms and practices prevalent within companies and theatres. The presence of children on stage thus becomes an integral part of the performance, helping to redefine the boundaries between private life and artistic creation and opening up a space for shared reflection on the relationship between motherhood and work in the world of the performing arts.
