Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975)
Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47
Music and dance come together in REVOLTA, a project by the Geneva Camerata that transforms Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony into a powerful and immersive theatrical experience. Through a fusion of musical expression and movement, the orchestra and dancers share the stage, creating a performance that combines energy, tension and expressive freedom.
With REVOLTA, the LAC brings the music and dance seasons together in a performance that transcends the boundaries of the traditional concert. The Geneva Camerata, a chamber orchestra founded in 2013 and conducted by David Greilsammer, presents a project born from a collaboration with choreographer Kader Attou, in which music and movement merge into a single theatrical language.
The musicians play from memory whilst moving through the space, following the choreography and sharing the stage with the dancers, including Grichka, Dexter, Hendrickx and Melissa, practitioners of krump – an urban dance style originating in the neighbourhoods of Los Angeles and characterised by great energy, expressive freedom and intense emotional power.
At the heart of the project, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 – composed in 1937 during a period of intense political pressure – becomes the starting point for a reflection on artistic rebellion and freedom. The tension of the score intertwines with the physical language of krump, giving shape to a performance that explores contemporary themes such as identity, courage and resistance.
