The proposed programme focuses on the contribution of double bass player and composer Enrico Francioni in the field of music for instruments with the aid of electronics, the latter managed both on fixed media and through live electronics. All the algorithms for the one-man performance, written using Csound, were designed and created by the performer himself. Among the pieces proposed, two can be considered “historic” in the literature for instrument and electronics: Ryoanji by John Cage, here in a quadraphonic version, and SOLO N.19 by Karlheinz Stockhausen. The first is explicitly dedicated to the double bass with supporting sounds, while the second, designed for any monodic instrument and delay lines (feedback), is presented here as a long improvisation on Form-Scheme Version II. The rest of the programme includes four other compositions by Francioni: Ricercare (1986/2024), for double bass and electronics; CLUSTER_I (2011), for double bass, live electronics and supporting sounds; Head in the clouds (2023), version for synthesised voice, double bass and electronics; Der letzte Flug (2018), for double bass and supporting sounds. These works, always placing the instrument at the forefront in terms of technical expression, aim to emphasise how electronic contamination/reaction, whether recorded or live, has been elevated to an essential component of instrumental performances in new music.
Graduated in Double Bass and Electronic Music at the Conservatory ‘G. Rossini’ in Pesaro, his teachers include: for double bass F. Grillo, E. Laine, F. Petracchi, W. Stert, B. Tommaso, and for electronic music, E. Giordani. He has also attended masterclasses with W. Branchi, L. Camilleri, J. Chadabe, J. Chowning, D. Monacchi, A. Petrolati, C. Roads, and A. Vidolin.
He is the author of instrumental chamber music, musical theatre, electronic music, educational works, writings on music and the generative code written with Csound for the app SOLO [No. 19] dedicated to the work of the same name by K. Stockhausen (apeSoft).
As a composer, he has won awards in national and international competitions: “E. Carella” (Val Tidone-PV, Italy), “Città di Pavia” (Pavia, Italy), AGIMUS (Varenna-LC, Italy), “A. Manoni” (Senigallia-AN, Italy), “Le note ritrovate” (Avellino, Italy), DI_stanze 2013 (Catania, Italy), “Amici della Musica di Cagliari” 2015 (Cagliari, Italy), “Concorso di Composizione Mario Perrucci” (Potenza, Italy).
He was a permanent double bass player in the “J. Haydn” Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento and has played with various Italian orchestras (Accademia Bizantina Ravenna, Filarmonica Marchigiana, “G. Rossini” Symphony Orchestra of Pesaro, RSM Symphony Orchestra).
He has devoted himself to teaching for many years and was professor of double bass at the Conservatory ‘G. Rossini’ in Pesaro.
