A singer, songwriter and anti-racism activist, Bia Ferreira is one of the rising stars of Brazil’s new music scene, and is also actively involved in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. The artist describes her music as “MMP” (música de mulher preta), or “black woman’s music”: a style that blends R&B, soul, Afrobeat, reggae and Bahian sounds with socially conscious rap and a sharp flow.
In her songs, themes such as the body, racism, homophobia, women’s rights and love find expression in direct and personal lyrics. Having emerged in 2017 with *Cota não é esmola*, an album dedicated to the university quota system for the Black population, Ferreira has brought issues of representation and access to education to the forefront of Brazilian cultural debate, gradually establishing herself on the international scene as well.
