Eugenio Schmidhauser at MASI Lugano: the exhibition enriched with a new portrait
An unpublished photograph joins the display at Palazzo Reali for Swiss Photomonth 2025
The exhibition dedicated to Eugenio Schmidhauser (1876–1952) at MASI Lugano, Palazzo Reali is enriched with the addition of an unpublished photographic portrait. The work comes from the recent donation of two photographs by the Astano-born photographer to the State Archives of the Canton of Ticino, donated by the heirs Marco Morandi through Brigitte Masciorini (Galleria Còrt du Leon).
These are large-format pigment prints, perfectly in line with the works already on view in terms of technical quality and style. The sitters are Pietro Domenico "Pa Pela" de Marchi and Beatrice "Mamma Bicia" de Marchi née Trezzini, members of the same family already portrayed in other photographs by Schmidhauser.
This donation further enriches a photographic corpus of great value for rediscovering the Malcantone region, to which the artist was deeply attached.
To highlight the acquisition, one of the two photographs will be integrated into the exhibition itinerary, presented in its original state, prior to restoration.
The exhibition Eugenio Schmidhauser. Beyond Malcantone is on view until 12 October 2025 at MASI Lugano, Palazzo Reali (Via Canova 10).
