Collezione Giancarlo e Danna Olgiati

The exhibition Prampolini Burri. Della Materia explores the use of alternative materials in art, compared to the traditional medium of painting, looking at practices that developed across the twentieth century in Italy.

This continuous line of experimentation with art materials was pursued by Enrico Prampolini (Modena, 1894 – Rome, 1956) and Alberto Burri (Città di Castello 1915 – Nice, 1995), both of whom were based in Rome.

Their explorations of the multiple expressive possibilities of different materials are illustrated in around 50 works from prestigious international public and private collections. From Prampolini’s Futurist, mixed media pieces to Burri’s potent creations, the show also highlights how their use of matter channels the zeitgeist of a complex, unsettling period in history, manifesting its violent, radical spirit.

Exhibition curated by Gabriella Belli and Bruno Corà, in collaboration with Fondazione Burri, Città di Castello. Exhibition design by Mario Botta.
