For the Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana at the LAC, Zimoun, one of the most interesting emerging Swiss artists, created a kinetic and acoustic work of art composed of 171 cardboard boxes drummed by a small fabric ball fixed to a vibrating pole.

The installation can be experienced in the second-floor lobby, a passage connecting the spaces of the building and their various purposes. Art, architecture, design and music are the components of Zimoun’s work of art, encapsulating the multifaceted soul of the LAC, visual, musical, architectural and performative.

Heading towards the museum’s second floor entrance, the visitor is greeted by a rustling sound, which might initially be mistaken for the sound of the escalator. The sound becomes gradually more discernible as the exhibit is approached. Almost blending into the museum’s architecture, the artwork emerges, creating an alienating effect. The orderly assemblage of elements is actually the site of buzzing sounds, like swarms of insects in a presumed aseptic environment, while a ticking evokes raindrops falling in an indoor museum, by definition, a weatherproof site. The result is a short-circuit of the expected and unexpected, geometric elements and centrifuge movements, between order and chaos.
