Sonata no. 20 in A major D 959
Each appearance of the great Romanian pianist Radu Lupu is eagerly awaited. His choice of an increasingly demanding repertoire and his infrequent performances ensure that each of his concerts is an epiphany not to be missed. In the course of his forthcoming recital in Lugano, Lupu with encounter two composers who have always been at the heart of his musical and spiritual reflection. The first is Franz Schubert, with his Six Moments musicaux followed by the enigmatic and solitary Sonata in A minor. In the second part, Schumann’s brilliant Kreisleriana (eight dark, fantastic and mad fantasies inspired by the Kapellmeister Johannes Kreisler imagined by the author E.T.A. Hoffmann), will remind us that Schumann – then aged 18 –wept throughout the night when he got the news of Schubert’s death.
