First performed in 1978, Kontakthof is one of the most emblematic works in the repertoire of Pina Bausch, the “mother of dance theatre”. Almost fifty years after its premiere, Australian choreographer Meryl Tankard, who performed in the original production, returns to collaborate with some of the original cast members, creating an intense reflection on the passing of time.
Created at a time when her position in the world of dance was gaining full recognition, Kontakthof represents a fundamental chapter in the long collaboration between the German choreographer and Rolf Borzik, author of the sets, costumes and visual documentation of the production. It is said that, even during the creation of the original 1978 version, Pina Bausch imagined the same group of dancers performing the work many years later, as adults.
In 2024, this wish will come true: Meryl Tankard will reunite with some members of the original cast to create a new production that interweaves restored archive footage – showing them performing as young people – with the physical presence of today's performers. A moving dialogue between past and present, celebrating those who are still on stage and paying tribute to those who are no longer with us.
