Lee-Ann Olwage’s two photo series The Dance and #BlackDragMagic documents life on the Cape Flats. Challenging the notion of the Cape Flats as a place of despair, she seeks out moments of celebration and resilience. The Dance shows young people dressed for their prom after completing school, often against the odds. #BlackDragMagic is situated in Khayelitsha, the biggest township on the Cape Flats and representative of the growing Xhosa presence in the city. In townships, queer bodies are often exposed to high levels of discrimination and violence. Lee-Ann Olwage’s portraits taken in public are not merely defiant in nature, but a celebration, a moment of pride and an assertion of belonging to a place and a culture despite being different.
